Mandarin

All students participate in the learning of Mandarin. China is the most populous nation in the world with 1.28 billion people. Mandarin Chinese is the mother tongue of over 873 million people, making it the most widely spoken first language in the world. The study of Mandarin at Mosman Prep involves an understanding of both Chinese culture and language.

K-2 students learn basic vocabulary and phrases for daily communication. They also learn Chinese classical literature such as the “Monkey King” story, Chinese calligraphy writing, traditional Chinese painting, as well as Chinese New Year celebrations.

In addition to their written and oral languages, students in Years 3-6 learn about Chinese history and the people, through stories such as “Hua Mulan”, who is a famous Chinese female hero. They edit their own storybooks in both Chinese and English, and participate in school a Chinese Culture Day, with student performances in Kung Fu, Tai Ji, and waist drums.

Year 5 and 6 students have more advanced workshops, in which expert instructors from China deliver lessons, such as dim sum making and silk tie-dying. Students also visit a Chinese Culture centre to have authentic Chinese learning experiences, such as paper cutting, riddle guessing and trying on traditional Chinese clothes.
