Whole School Wellbeing Initiative
In my final Messenger of 2025, I identified that a strong Pastoral Care and Wellbeing support structure empowers healthy relationships and holistic growth, and that in 2026 Mosman Prep will be partnering with Independent Schools NSW to engage in their Whole School Wellbeing Initiative.
It is exciting to think that our engagement with this initiative is taking place from a position of significant wellbeing strength - but also with a desire to be even more effective in our endeavours.
Our MMG Survey data continues to place student and staff wellbeing scores well above ‘like schools’ MMG Averages, with parent perception of student wellbeing 4% above the MMG average (in the 'Very High' category), and staff perception of their wellbeing 10% above (also in the ‘Very High’ category).
Whole School Wellbeing Initiative in a Nutshell
Independent Schools NSW offers support to schools in establishing new or strengthening existing whole-school strategies tailored to the unique mental health and wellbeing needs of their community.
The most effective way to enhance student wellbeing is through the implementation of a comprehensive, whole-school approach. This aligns with best practices in student wellbeing programs and contributes to broader mental health and wellbeing support for schools. Universal strategies and actions promote positive mental health and wellbeing for all students, as well as early intervention and targeted support.
The wellbeing of staff is essential for both their effective performance in the classroom and the academic growth of their students. A comprehensive whole-school approach to wellbeing includes a dedicated focus on staff wellbeing, encompassing actions at the individual, social, and organisational levels to protect, promote, and support overall wellbeing.
Throughout the initiative, Mosman Prep will be supported in achieving the following key outcomes:
- Establish or strengthen whole-school wellbeing actions – monitor and support student wellbeing, mental health, social-emotional development, and behaviour, tailored to community needs in a safe, inclusive environment.
- Build staff capability – provide ongoing, research-informed professional learning to enhance staff knowledge and skills in supporting student wellbeing and behaviour.
- Use evidence to guide priorities – map current wellbeing practices, identify strengths and gaps, and focus on targeted, evidence-based improvements.
- Plan for consistency – develop a whole-school wellbeing scope and sequence aligned to a multi-tiered system of support, ensuring developmentally appropriate opportunities across all year levels.
- Strengthen professional connection – establish networks and collegial connections with consultants, external wellbeing specialists, and staff from other Independent Schools to share expertise and build a community of practice.
The Independent Schools NSW Whole-School Wellbeing initiative will build on the already strong wellbeing structures and frameworks at Mosman Prep. Through collaborative partnership, we will be strengthening our shared vision and coordinated plan for wellbeing that spans all levels of the School community.
