A Significant Moment in History
This week marked a very significant moment in Mosman Prep’s history - the official confirmation of a renewed affiliation with Shore.
Following careful consideration, and unanimous approval on 18 May 2026, the Members of Mosman Prep have now formalised this historic relationship.
The purpose of this agreement is twofold:
- Certainty for Families: To provide greater clarity and confidence for families planning future secondary pathways for their sons.
- Preserving our Identity: To firmly safeguard Mosman Prep’s future, independence, unique culture, and cherished approach to education.
To understand the significance of this relationship and its inception, we look back to our foundations.
Alfred (‘Tibby’) Yarnold founded Mosman Prep 122 years ago. After attending Shore as a student (including being the first Shore Prefect), he completed his Higher Education degrees at the University of Sydney. Eventually, he returned to Shore as a teacher, previously teaching at The King’s School and Newington College.
Yarnold was commissioned by the Head of Shore and the Parish Council of St Clement’s Church. In his words, “The main aim of this school will be to fit boys for the parent institution (Shore)”. Mosman Prep began as a family-run endeavour, later transitioning into a not-for-profit company governed by a Board and Members.
Having been envisioned in close connection with Shore from the very beginning, this new formal affiliation feels, in many ways, like "coming home" - but now, we return as a mature school in our own right, defined by our own distinct and very special character.
While the affiliation strengthens and clarifies an educational pathway to Shore, please be assured that Mosman Prep will continue to operate as an entirely independent school. We retain our own:
- Leadership and day-to-day management
- Unique school culture and Christian foundations
- Closely knit community spirit
- Close educational links with a few other Senior Schools
Mosman Prep will also wholeheartedly continue to welcome and support families with intentions to attend other secondary schools. We remain deeply committed to maintaining and nurturing the existing secondary school partnerships we now enjoy.
Allow me to reiterate, we are excited that this affiliation strengthens the educational pathway to Shore for those families choosing that option, while ensuring Mosman Prep continues to operate as an independent school, with its own leadership, culture, Christian foundations, day-to-day management, and secure entry options to other Senior Schools of choice.
As we step into this exciting new chapter, we do so by honouring the 122 years of history that brought us here. We extend our deepest gratitude to the past Headmasters, Council members, staff, Old Boys, and families whose contributions built the School we love today.
